Following on one of the most well received 16 minutes of music in recent history (2006's A Lesson In Crime EP), Newmarket Ontario's Tokyo Police Club will release a debut album entitled Elephant Shell.
If bassist/vocalist David Monks once described the band's music as "wide‐eyed post‐punk with a tendency to get over excited‐so much so that someone has to come and tell it to settle down," Elephant Shell is the sound of four early‐20‐somethings now seasoned through hundreds of shows from tiny clubs to the festival throngs at Coachella and Glastonbury, maturing a bit and learning to temper and modulate their own more varied musical moods. Or maybe Canada's socialized health care means easier access to generic Ritalin and Adderall?

The first seeds of the band were originally planted on Canada’s salty‐aired East Coast in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Young Warren C. Spicer and Matthew ‘the Woodman’ Woodley had begun playing together in high‐school bands. The sea winds eventually carried them through the vast plains of Quebec to Montreal (a journey they would come to know intimately as the years wore on). It was in the now hallowed halls of Concordia University’s music department that they would come upon Nicolas Basque, a strange francophone native that shared their musical inclinations (and a trappeur’s finely‐tuned taste in cuisine). It wasn’t until then that the three boys became men, signified their union with a name, and that Plants and Animals emerged from the wildlife.

Higgs crafts warm, willowy sounds over dreamy, confessional lyrics. But what sets Higgs apart is her predilection for mixing acoustic balladry with synthesized flourishes—call it folktronica. The fiddle-fueled opener "Parables" features cascading vocal loops, while the buzzing "Apples" may owe something to Higgs' role in the trip-hop project Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees. Compelling lyrics + experimental arrangements = another adventurous Canadian artist.

Against the Grain is an appropriate title for Ryan LeBlanc's latest CD. After all, his approach to playing is anything but conventional. Weaving together rich acoustic guitar tones, the unique timbre of a claw hammer banjo, and the sweet, lonely voice of harmonica, Ryan creats layered melodic soundscapes that are nothing short of captivating. A strong rhythmic feel from cajon (Box drum) and djembe is accented by the resonating tones of his instruments as his hands dance gently between fretboard and body.

If there is such a thing as a “reluctant pop song,” then Hospital Grade has perfected an intelligent, full-flail version of the art on Secrets & Sawdust, their first new album in four years. The delay was likely due to a laissez-faire Maritime pace of life but you’d not guess it by the manic energy in spades here. The way HG mixes together so many elements of energetic alt-rock sounds from the 1990s continues to startle, and to evolve. Echoes of detuned, angular, post-punk firebrands such as Fugazi, the Ex, and Jawbox float about on most songs. Secrets & Sawdust features strings, pounding rhythmical-almost-dance elements, and a surprisingly infectious thread of melody.
